CREDIT SECURITY

A credit score indicates a person’s creditworthiness.  The higher the score, the higher the ability of a consumer to borrow more money from lenders.  A credit score is based on a person’s credit history.  Your credit history is affected by how many financial accounts you have opened, how much debt you have (or have had), whether you repaid that debt in a timely fashion and other factors.  Institutions who lend money to people or hope to expect a stream of money from people (like when you rent an apartment, condo or house) rely heavily on your credit score to determine whether you are a good risk and/or whether they should loan money to you.  Your credit score is typically a number between 300 – 850.

Needless to say, your credit score is an important part of your financial picture.  Like any important part of your finances, you must safeguard your credit score.  Identity theft is rampant and can often be detected by checking your credit score and credit history.  If someone gets ahold of your personal information, he/she may use it to get your money and/or assets.  This may include opening a credit card, getting a loan or renting an apartment using your personal information.  He/she may also try to access your accounts.  Checking your credit score and credit history may help you to know if this type of activity has taken place.  Because of this, it's important to regularly check your credit score. Your credit score and credit history are worth protecting as they are among the factors that may determine your loan terms, including interest rate.  It's important to ensure the information on your credit reports is accurate and complete.
